This project is part of Jerusalem’s new public transportation system, which includes several light rail lines, park and ride facilities, and light rail depots. The P+R parking structures are located in key positions where incoming private vehicular traffic from the larger Jerusalem area can be transferred to public transportation.
This P+R parking garage is situated in between a road and natural areas covered with olive groves. Part of the structure is located under a large light rail station with a cheek-to-cheek interface with local and regional buses.
The design for the garage proposes a terraced cut into the existing topography, providing full natural ventilation and light exposure to the eastern facade while mitigating the visual impact of the structure toward its surroundings. Elevators and staircases provide direct access from the parking levels to the light rail station. Bicycle access is encouraged by providing bicycle storage above ground and in dedicated rooms underground. The roof of the parking lot is envisioned as a large and sheltered public square with beautiful views towards the open landscape.
